Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

French at St Joseph’s enables the learner to develop an interest in another culture and explore the French language. A cross curricular approach will be used allowing the children to make links between cultural differences and diversity.

In Key Stage 2 they will embed this learning and develop  knowledge and skills such as learning to speak in simple sentences and engaging in basic conversations, asking, and answering questions and responding accurately.

We follow the Lingotot language French Scheme. The scheme motivates pupils with fun language through; songs and games to aid memorisation and shows skill progression over the four years of KS2 in Oracy, Literacy and intercultural understanding . We have a specialist language teacher who teaches across the KS2.

Our hope is that the children develop a love of foreign languages in their journey as lifelong learners, achieving their God given potential.

Implementation

The children begin their French journey in Year 3, learning numbers, colours and greeting as they embark on their  French curriculum journey. In KS2 they will embed their learning and develop further knowledge and skills such as learning  to speak in   simple sentences and engage in basic conversation, asking and answering  questions and responding accurately. The Lingotot scheme has a  focus on pronunciation of the language but also gives opportunities in lessons to record their French  written work . The scheme motivates pupils with fun stories, songs and games to aid memorisation and bring the idea of the ‘Four skills’ together (listening, speaking, reading and writing) The scheme will be used in each year group in KS2 at a pace that allows progression and consolidation and reflection. Our MFL progression maps show how the Key assessment criteria are covered and how children are given the opportunity to consolidate their learning.

 Impact

We have started using the Lingotot scheme this academic year (2022-2023) with our specialist language teacher and are adapting it to aid our children’s development and learning of a new language. We are doing this in a way that we feel will promote a unique experience  to explore areas of the French language and give our children opportunities to learn a new language; through songs, practical activities, games, and lots of verbal ques. This will be monitored by the teachers  and the MFL co-ordinator through observations and book monitoring-allowing for reflection to develop the curriculum further.
